Carpets are made of different materials.
The most common ones are Wool (most comfortable), Nylon (harder wearing), Polypropylene (easy-to-clean) & Blends (a combination of the above materials).
Structure
The next important feature to consider is the structure.
You will have the choice between Woven Carpets (higher-end), Tufted Carpets (more commonly available), and Felt-Backed Carpets (a low-cost option).

Pile Cut Carpets are made by cutting the tops of the thread loops during weaving, creating a soft and attractive appearance.
Almost all polypropylene carpets are better off as Pile Carpets as it is more resilient to flattening. Also, different lengths of piles can produce different textures.

This is pretty straightforward.
More of the material at the top of the carpet, better quality that carpet is. Having said that, a heavier carpet doesn’t always make a better choice, necessarily as the location/placement and fitting needs to be considered as well.
